Ruby
Crimson Iron
“The bigger they are, the harder they fall to my scythe.”
— The Legend
The village of Willowmere sat at the edge of the Black Forest like a candle flame in a storm — small, fragile, and always one gust away from being snuffed out. For generations, the people lived in fear of what lurked beyond the treeline: werewolves, shadow beasts, and creatures with no name that howled through the night and left nothing but silence and grief behind.
Ruby was seven years old the night the wolves came for her family.
She remembered the smell of burning wood and iron, the sound of her father's hammer going quiet mid-strike, and then — screaming. Her mother had pushed her beneath the floorboards of the forge and whispered a single word: "Stay." Ruby obeyed. She lay in the dark, pressing her hands over her ears, listening to the world above her shatter. When the sounds finally stopped and the silence became unbearable, she crawled out to find the forge destroyed, the anvil cracked, and her parents gone. Not dead — gone. Taken. Dragged into the Black Forest by a pack that left only claw marks and a trail of crimson in the snow.
The village elders told her to mourn and move on. They said the forest always claimed its due. They said a child could not fight what grown men had fled from. Ruby said nothing. She simply returned to the ruins of her father's forge.
For three years she worked alone, learning the craft her father had never finished teaching her. Her hands blistered, bled, and hardened. She melted down every scrap of iron in the forge — the broken tools, the cracked horseshoes, the hinges from the scorched door — and she poured it all into a single weapon. Not a sword. Not a spear. A scythe. Massive, curved, and weighted at the blade so that when it swung, it didn't just cut — it pulled. It dragged. It refused to let go.
She was ten years old when she first walked into the Black Forest alone.
She came back three days later, her red hood soaked dark, dragging the body of the alpha werewolf behind her. The village watched in stunned silence from behind their locked doors. Ruby dropped the carcass at the edge of the treeline, looked back at the people who had told her to give up, and said nothing. She simply turned and walked back into the forest.
Over the years that followed, Ruby became something the Black Forest had never encountered before — a hunter who did not run. Every creature that had terrorised Willowmere learned to fear the sound of a spinning scythe and the flash of a red hood between the trees. She moved like a storm given form, her fighting style a relentless, spinning dance of slashes and sweeps that pulled enemies off their feet and into the arc of her blade before they could recover. She was not the biggest warrior. She was not the strongest. But she was the most relentless — a girl who had learned in the dark beneath the floorboards that the only thing worse than a monster was the silence it left behind.
She never found her parents. But she found something else in the Black Forest — purpose. Every village that sent word of creatures in the night, every farmer who woke to find livestock slaughtered and tracks leading into the dark, every child who lay beneath floorboards listening to the world above them fall apart — Ruby came for them. The girl in the red hood. The Crimson Iron. The one who hunted monsters so others didn't have to.
The Black Forest still stands. The creatures within it still stir. But they no longer rule the night without consequence. Somewhere in the dark between the trees, a scythe is spinning — and Ruby is smiling.
